On the eve of the 2024 national elections, this course will provide an inside view on how the American court system – federal courts and Maine courts -really works, how judges are selected, the politicization of American courts, the 2024 election and the fate of American democracy. Guest presenters will include a United States Federal District Court Judge, a Maine Supreme Court Judge, a Maine Superior Court trial judge and an elections expert.

This is a 6-week in-person course. A reminder will be emailed two days prior to the first class. Recordings of the course will be emailed to registered participants with viewing option for two weeks after each class.

Instructor: BERNARD (BERNEY) KUBETZ
Berney Kubetz is a semi-retired trial attorney who practiced for 50 years with the Eaton Peabody law firm and focused on civil litigation including constitutional law, representation of the media, legal malpractice and general civil litigation. His clients included the Bangor Daily News, The Ellsworth American, WABI TV, WLBZ TV, NBC, General Electric, the Bangor Region YMCA, Bangor Savings Bank and New Balance.
A native New Yorker, Berney attended Bowdoin College and Syracuse Law School. Frequent guest lecturer for clients, industry groups and at UMO, Berney also taught a PVSC course in Fall 2023 on Freedom of the Press and the First Amendment.
This is the second course Berney has taught for PVSC, and we hope for many more.
