This course will examine political history of the Middle East from the rise of Jewish and Arab nationalism in the 19th century through the cresting of regional American influence in the early 20th century.

The course will analyze the Arab-Jewish conflict with reference to the domination of European powers until their decline in the mid-10th century; the Cold War era, the period of American dominance beginning with the collapse of the Soviet Union; the political and military conflicts, as well as attempts to negotiate peace in the region.

This is a 6-week in-person course held at UMA-Bangor Campus, Eastport Hall. A reminder will be emailed two days before the first class. Recordings of the course will be emailed to registered participants with viewing option for two weeks after each class.


Instructor: Rabbi Bill Siemers
Bill Siemers is Rabbi of Congregation Beth Israel in Bangor, Maine. He is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania and the Jewish Theological Seminary. A member of the faculty of the University of Maine at Orono since 2014, he has taught a variety of courses in religious studies and mediaeval and modern Jewish history, antisemitism and the Yiddish language.
