This course analyzes the life and extraordinary films of Chinese director, Zhang Yimon. We will look specifically at Raise the Red Lantern (1991), a sumptuous melodrama set in historic rural China.;  To Live  (1994), a realistic drama centered on themes of resilience and survival of ordinary Chinese people; and Hero (2002), an imaginative revisiting of traditional Chinese forms.
